South Korean giant Shinhan Financial Group is making a decisive move toward the tokenization of real-world assets (RWA). Its subsidiary, Shinhan Asset Management, has signed a strategic memorandum of understanding with the Solana Foundation, the Etherfuse platform, and the decentralized exchange Orca. Through joint efforts, the partners intend to implement a proof-of-concept for issuing a tokenized fund denominated in Korean won (KRW).
Benchmarking BlackRock BUIDL
As a reference model for the new product, Shinhan Asset Management directly points to BlackRock's BUIDL structure — the world's largest tokenized fund operating on the Ethereum blockchain. This is a landmark signal: Asian financial institutions are increasingly replicating successful Western cases, adapting them to local jurisdiction and infrastructure. Solana, with its high throughput and low fees, looks like a logical choice for high-frequency operations with KRW assets.
The scale of the player is impressive: as of August this year, Shinhan Asset Management managed assets worth 133.6 trillion KRW, equivalent to approximately $96.6 billion. This is not a startup experiment but a systemic initiative by one of the largest players in the Asian capital market.
Legal Context and Implementation Horizon
The key factor determining the project's timing is the regulatory environment. In South Korea, the legal framework for offering tokenized securities will only take effect in February 2027. Thus, the current pilot is not just a technical test but preparation of infrastructure and business processes for the moment when legislation opens the gates for mass adoption.
My expert assessment: Shinhan is wisely using the time lag until 2027 to accumulate competencies and test liquidity. However, it is important to understand that BUIDL's success in the U.S. was driven not only by technology but also by deep integration with the traditional financial system. The Korean consortium will need to solve a similar challenge — and Solana with Orca are merely tools here, not a guarantee of success. Keep an eye on this case: it could become a precedent for the entire Asian RWA market.
