Shinhan Asset Management is preparing to launch a tokenized fund in Korean won on the Solana blockchain.

The managing subsidiary of South Korean financial giant Shinhan Financial Group has announced a strategic partnership with the Solana Foundation, the Etherfuse platform, and the DEX protocol Orca. Through joint efforts, the parties intend to implement a pilot project to issue a tokenized investment fund denominated in Korean won (KRW). This is an ambitious step that could become an important milestone for integrating real-world assets (RWA) into the digital currency ecosystem.
Focus on the BlackRock model
As a reference architecture for the new product, Shinhan Asset Management has chosen the BUIDL structure from BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager. The benchmark fund, launched on Ethereum, has already demonstrated the viability of institutional RWA solutions. However, the Korean case differs in a significant detail: the use of Solana, whose throughput and low fees make it attractive for high-frequency operations with tokenized instruments.
As of the end of August, assets under management at Shinhan Asset Management amounted to an impressive 133.6 trillion KRW, equivalent to approximately $96.6 billion. Such scale suggests that the project is not just an experiment but a potential bridge between traditional finance and decentralized capital markets.
Legal context and prospects
It is important to emphasize that a full-fledged legal framework for tokenized securities in South Korea will only come into force in February 2027. This means that the current pilot is a preventive preparation for the regulatory era when the issuance of digital assets will become legal and standardized. Given that Seoul aims to take a leading position in Asia's digital economy, an early market entry with a proven model could give Shinhan a significant competitive advantage.
In my assessment, choosing Solana as the underlying blockchain is a bold but logical move. While Ethereum remains the standard for large institutional issuances, Solana offers scalability that is critical for retail access and liquidity. If the pilot proves successful, we could see a wave of imitators among other Asian financial groups, accelerating the convergence of traditional markets and DeFi.
