The cryptocurrency market is once again demonstrating astonishing volatility, and this time the spotlight is on Zcash (ZEC). My analysis shows that the token has broken through a multi-year ceiling, updating highs not seen since January 2018. The reason for such a sharp move was the intensification of efforts by the asset management company Grayscale to create an exchange-traded fund (ETF) based on this asset.

Grayscale Reveals Details of the Fifth Filing Version

The key catalyst for the growth was an update to the documentation submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). In the fourth version of the filing, questions about the fee and the fund's name remained unclear, but the fifth version closed those gaps. I note that the manager has set an annual fee of 2.5% of the trust's net asset value, accrued daily.

The trust itself will be renamed The Zcash ETF, and its shares are planned to be listed on the NYSE Arca exchange under the ticker ZCSH. This is a significant step toward legitimizing the asset in the eyes of institutional investors. The documents emphasize that, although investments in the fund's shares are not a direct investment in ZEC, they are designed to provide simple and relatively inexpensive access to the token's price.

It is important to note that Grayscale has taken on a voluntary commitment to direct all fees to marketing and product development for 12 months. However, this is not a strict requirement, and the company may abandon it at any time. The custody of the underlying tokens will be provided by Coinbase Custody Trust Company, while the functions of transfer agent and administrator will be assumed by Bank of New York Mellon.

Analysis of Market Reaction

The news triggered a powerful surge in buying activity. Over the past 24 hours, the ZEC price has risen by 34%, making it the growth leader among the top-100 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization. On Saturday, the token exceeded the $800 mark for the first time since January 2018, reaching an intraday high of $857, followed by some correction to $784.

For context: Zcash's all-time high was recorded in October 2016 at $3,191. The current growth looks especially impressive against the backdrop of the June decline, when the disclosure of a vulnerability in one of the network's protected pools led to a price collapse of nearly half. An emergency software update then helped stabilize the situation, but the market has been in a state of uncertainty since then.

My expert assessment: filing for an ETF is a powerful signal, but not a guarantee of approval. The regulatory environment in the U.S. remains strict, and the SEC's decision could be delayed. Nevertheless, the very fact that Grayscale continues to invest resources in promoting Zcash speaks to long-term faith in the fundamental value of this privacy asset. For investors, this is an opportunity, but with a high level of risk, given ZEC's historical volatility.
