Starting September 1, two major Russian companies — the retail chain Magnit and telecom operator MTS — will begin accepting the digital ruble as a means of payment. This is a landmark step for introducing the state digital currency into everyday circulation, which I have long been tracking in the context of the evolution of payment infrastructure.

The mechanics for consumers look as follows: to pay for purchases on the marketplaces Ozon and Wildberries, a customer will need to open a digital ruble wallet directly in their bank's mobile app. After activating the wallet, the new payment method will automatically appear in the order checkout interface. For sellers, in turn, opening a separate account is provided, intended exclusively for receiving settlements in digital currency.

It is important to emphasize that the digital ruble is not a cryptocurrency in the classical sense, but a fiat currency issued by the Central Bank. Its key difference from non-cash funds is the unique identifier of each coin, which increases transaction transparency and reduces fraud risks. However, until now, the actual use of the digital ruble remained more of a pilot project, limited to a narrow circle of participants.

The decision by Magnit and MTS, two giants with multi-million customer bases, signals a transition from testing to practical scaling. This is especially important for retail and e-commerce, where payment speed and convenience are critical. I expect that in the coming months, other major retailers will join them, as the regulator is actively stimulating the integration of the national digital currency.

From my point of view, the main challenge here is not technical implementation, but the behavioral inertia of users. Most Russians are accustomed to cashback and bonuses from banks, which the digital ruble does not yet offer. Therefore, the success of the initiative will depend on how quickly the Central Bank and commercial banks can offer incentives for the transition. However, the very fact of starting acceptance at such giants is already a powerful marker that the digital ruble is ceasing to be an experimental story and is becoming part of the mainstream.
