Wall Street's largest banks are revising their positions on key crypto market players, signaling a shift in sentiment within the institutional environment. I am noting a significant update in forecasts: Goldman Sachs raised its price target for Coinbase (COIN) shares, and Canaccord Genuity did the same for Strategy (MSTR, formerly MicroStrategy). Both financial institutions maintained a "buy" recommendation, underscoring their confidence in further growth.
This decision was a logical response to the powerful rally we observed last week. Digital assets accelerated their upward movement, and the stock market reacted sensitively to this.
Goldman Sees Potential in Derivatives and Prediction Markets
Goldman Sachs analysts raised the price target for COIN from $173 to $196, approximately 13% above the previous benchmark. In my view, the key signal here is not just the numbers, but the reasoning. The bank highlights two growth drivers: the overall improvement in the crypto market and the sustainable development of Coinbase's unique business segments, including derivatives and prediction markets.
Trading closed at $187.16 per share, up 4.28%. The new target implies a growth potential of about 5% from current levels. Notably, back in March the bank targeted $235, but later revised its forecast downward.
Strategy: A "Breath of Fresh Air" from Canaccord
Canaccord Genuity was even more optimistic about Strategy, raising its price target from $130 to $175. This is an impressive jump of 35%, which exceeds Tuesday's closing price ($126.83) by approximately 38%. The bank succinctly but aptly characterized the situation: "Over the past couple of weeks, MSTR's position has improved noticeably — like a breath of fresh air."
Market dynamics fully confirm this optimism. Since August 19, MSTR shares have risen 34.66%, while COIN has gained 27.14% over the same period. This is compelling evidence of a sentiment reversal.
It is worth recalling that the situation was different in the summer: on July 31, Wall Street analysts were lowering forecasts for COIN after the company reported weaker-than-expected results for the third consecutive quarter.
My expert conclusion: The simultaneous raising of targets by two reputable banks is a powerful bullish signal. However, I advise investors to remain cautious: whether last week's rally can continue into September will be a key test for these optimistic scenarios. For now, the fundamental drivers — Coinbase's business diversification and Strategy's BTC accumulation strategy — look convincing, but crypto market volatility has not been canceled.
