While the market consolidated in a narrow range, three landmark events emerged in the industry: an urgent warning for Lightning node operators, the first quantum-resistant transaction on the Bitcoin mainnet, and Unstoppable Domains' withdrawal from the fight for Web3 domains.
Market: Sideways Movement and Mixed Flows
As of the morning of August 27, Bitcoin (BTC) held positions near $78,806, showing minimal volatility in the range of $77,650–$79,200. Over the day, the price corrected by just 0.46% — a classic sign of an accumulation phase, when large players gather liquidity before a decisive move. Ethereum (ETH) looked more confident: up 1.06% to $2,493, with an overnight peak around $2,507.
Among the top 25 by market cap, mixed dynamics were observed. Growth leaders were Solana (SOL) with a gain of 4.59%, Chainlink (LINK) — 1.74%, and BNB — 1.18%. The laggards included XRP (-2.70%), Canton (CC) (-2.10%), and Gram (GRAM) (-1.85%). Among the top 100, SPX6900 (SPX) stood out, surging 17.11%, while Polygon (POL) plunged 13.42% and Pyth Network (PYTH) lost 10.13%.
Flows into spot ETFs remain positive: Bitcoin funds attracted $232.12 million, Ethereum products — $192.35 million, XRP — $28.14 million, Hyperliquid — $14.71 million, Solana — $9.14 million. Over the day, positions worth $258.53 million were liquidated, with the distribution between longs and shorts being almost symmetrical ($130.51 million versus $128 million), confirming the absence of a directional trend.
Lightning Security Under Threat from AI
Core Lightning developers issued an urgent warning for node operators: they must either install the upcoming security update or switch nodes to offline mode. The reason is a series of vulnerabilities generated by artificial intelligence over recent weeks. The team is deliberately withholding details and CVE identifiers for about two more weeks to give operators time to update. This is an alarming signal: AI is already capable of finding critical holes in infrastructure faster than human auditors.
Quantum Protection for Bitcoin Becomes Reality
StarkWare researcher Avihu Levi conducted the first confirmed transaction under the Quantum-Safe Bitcoin scheme on the mainnet. The technology shifts security from elliptic curve cryptography to hash functions, without requiring a soft fork or changes to consensus rules. True, this is still an experimental approach: each operation requires $75–150 of off-chain GPU computations. However, the very fact of a mainnet demonstration is an important step toward preparing the ecosystem for the post-quantum era.
Unstoppable Domains Surrenders
Unstoppable Domains has officially withdrawn its application to ICANN for registering Web3 domains (.crypto, .wallet, .NFT, .Bitcoin, .DAO, and .ZIL) in the 2026 round. Founder Matthew Gould admitted: legal costs and potential bidding wars for the zones exceed expected revenue. He called the Web3 domain market "small and narrow." Client funds for pre-ordered domains will be refunded. The company will continue operating as an on-chain asset for crypto payments, but will not enter the traditional DNS system for now.
My view: The withdrawal from ICANN is a pragmatic decision, but it calls into question the future of the entire Web3 domain segment as an independent market. Meanwhile, the quantum-resistant transaction and the Lightning vulnerabilities are two signals that Bitcoin's infrastructure is entering a new phase of maturity, where security requires constant adaptation to new threats. The market, meanwhile, appears to be preparing for a breakout of the current range — the question is only in which direction.
