Meta is actively exploring the integration of robotic systems into its data centers, aiming to automate routine technical operations. This involves connecting and replacing cables, restarting servers, and maintaining equipment—tasks traditionally considered the prerogative of humans. In my analysis, this is a logical step for a company scaling its AI infrastructure, but it carries serious social risks.

Technological Foundation and Pilot Projects

The experiments involve equipment from Watney Robotics, Kinova, and ABB. A key element is the Kinova Gen3 robotic arm, which is being tested for restarting and disconnecting servers from power. In parallel, a system for automatically replacing network cables is being developed. At several facilities, a simplified mechanism resembling a "finger" has already been deployed, which presses the power button on devices like Mac Mini upon a remote operator command.

According to estimates from one data center employee, the successful implementation of a cable-replacement robot could take on up to 80% of the workload in certain positions. This is an impressive figure, but it also raises concerns among staff. "We thought those of us doing physical work would be safe for a while longer, but not anymore," one worker shared their worries. Meta, for its part, refrains from official comments on specific trials.

Limitations of Current Systems

Automation in Meta's data centers is not new. For several years, autonomous machines for transporting heavy server racks and wheeled robots for inventory have been operating in Iowa and Virginia. However, their capabilities are limited: cameras work in monochrome mode, which prevents distinguishing color indicators, and navigation is hindered when navigating turns and cables on the floor. Moreover, the devices operate slower than humans and require recharging.

Meta has concluded that current systems cannot handle complex tasks, including cable routing for supercomputers based on Nvidia GB300. Since June 2025, two-armed Watney robots have been tested at the Altoona campus, but so far they operate under human control. At the new Prometheus facility in Ohio, four-wheeled ABB machines with a lifting mechanism are being tested, which are already used for installing components and may gain more autonomy in the future.

Social Aspect and Meta's Response

Concern about potential layoffs is growing among employees. Some fear that robotization and AI tools will allow the company to delegate responsibilities to less qualified staff. However, Meta spokesperson Francis Brennan is categorical: "We need more workers, not fewer." In 2026, the company launched a free training program in electrical and mechanical specialties with guaranteed employment for graduates in several states.

My view: Meta is balancing between cost optimization and maintaining staff loyalty. Robotization is inevitable, but betting on retraining is the right move to avoid conflicts.
