The digital asset market in Russia is entering a new phase of institutionalization. Starting September 1, 2026, brokers and asset management companies will gain the legal right to act as intermediaries in cryptocurrency transactions. This is not just another regulatory amendment, but a fundamental shift in how the retail investor will interact with Bitcoin and other digital currencies.
The end of the era of "double standards"
Until now, the domestic investor had to exist in two parallel realities: the familiar stock market with its well-established infrastructure, and a separate, semi-legal world of crypto exchanges with their own rules of the game. Now this barrier is disappearing. Buying Bitcoin will become as routine an operation as purchasing stocks or bonds — everything will happen in one window, in one app, with the usual level of service and reporting.
Key point: to launch this direction, brokers do not necessarily need to build their own crypto exchange. They already have the main things — a client base, KYC procedures, liquidity, and trust. Only the final link is missing: cryptocurrency liquidity and secure custody. The most logical model is partnership with specialized crypto providers that will handle trade execution and custodial functions. Such schemes are already working successfully on the global market, for example, with Interactive Brokers.
A new client and new competition
The arrival of brokers will radically change the demand structure. This is not about hardcore traders, who will remain on specialized platforms for futures and hundreds of altcoins. The main prize is the mass investor, for whom Bitcoin and Ethereum are just 5–15% of a diversified portfolio. Such a client does not need complex instruments; they need simplicity: sold a bond, bought BTC — and all analytics and risk management in one place.
The Bank of Russia is already working on a regulatory framework that will allow movement in this direction. In the end, the market will not be divided into "winners and losers" — it will simply become segmented. Active crypto enthusiasts will stay on exchanges, while conservative investors will gain access to digital assets through familiar channels. The main competitive advantage will not be the fee or the number of coins, but a seamless user experience.
My view: This is a historic moment for the Russian crypto industry. Legalization through brokers is the most effective path to mass adoption, which has already proven itself in the West. The only question is how quickly Russian brokers can establish technological partnerships and offer competitive terms. Those who do this first will gain a huge advantage in the fight for the new client.
