Russian banking giant Sber has taken an important step in institutionalizing the crypto market by launching a cross-border cryptocurrency payment service for corporate clients. This decision marks a transition from discussions about digital assets to their practical application in the real economy.

The key advantage of the new tool is speed and cost efficiency. A transfer from one crypto wallet to another now takes just minutes, whereas traditional bank transactions can stretch over days. The average transaction cost is only 0.3%, significantly lower than fees for using classic payment systems. For businesses operating in international markets, this is not just cost optimization but a matter of competitiveness.

How the new service works

The service is available to all corporate clients of Sber engaged in foreign economic activity. The absence of a minimum payment threshold and the automatic generation of all necessary documentation for banks and currency control make the process maximally transparent and convenient. The system itself generates reporting at the moment of the transaction, reducing the administrative burden on companies.

It is important to emphasize that the launch became possible thanks to changes in legislation. The President of Russia signed a law that systematically regulates the circulation of digital currencies, taking effect on September 1, 2026. Most of the provisions are already in force, and it is they that created the legal basis for such operations. The ban on paying for goods with cryptocurrency domestically remains, but settlements under foreign trade contracts between residents and non-residents have been exempted from this restriction. This opened the way for Sber to conduct legal cross-border payments without the risk of violating the law.

Global practice confirms the demand for such solutions: cryptocurrency settlements are already actively used in the European Union, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, the UAE, Iran, Japan, Turkey, and a number of other states. Sber is successfully adapting proven foreign models to Russian realities.

Strategic development vector

This step is not an isolated event but part of the bank's large-scale strategy to explore the crypto market. Earlier, Sber already announced a line of crypto products: client investments in instruments tied to cryptocurrencies exceeded 2 billion rubles. The bank plans to expand its line of structured bonds and digital financial assets linked to BTC and ETH. Moreover, by December 1, 2026, the launch of cryptocurrency trading and a digital depository is expected, which will provide qualified investors with legal banking infrastructure instead of foreign platforms.

Together with international payments, this builds a full cycle: from trading and storing assets to using them in real transactions with foreign partners. In parallel, the bank is betting on advanced technologies, including autonomous AI agents, which indicates a systematic approach to the digital transformation of financial services.

My view: The launch of cross-border crypto payments by Sber is a signal of the maturity of the Russian crypto market. The bank is not just following the trend but is building infrastructure that could become a bridge between traditional finance and the digital economy. The question now is the pace of scaling and the readiness of businesses to transition to new rails of settlement.
