Standard Chartered predicts explosive growth of DeFi to $2.7 trillion by 2030

The total value locked (TVL) in decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols could reach $2.7 trillion by the end of 2030. This represents nearly a 37-fold increase from current levels. Key catalysts for this process will be the tokenization of real-world assets (RWA) and the development of on-chain infrastructure.
Analysis shows that currently only about 3% of the total stablecoin supply and no more than 10% of all tokenized RWAs are utilized in DeFi. By the end of the decade, these figures could grow to 30% — precisely what will drive such aggressive dynamics. Reaching the $2.7 trillion mark would require a ninefold increase in the share of tokenized assets used in DeFi protocols.
Risks of Liquidity Fragmentation
However, it is not all straightforward. Several experts warn of serious obstacles. Issuing the same asset on multiple blockchains leads to fragmented liquidity pools and higher operational costs. Moreover, tokenization itself does not solve the illiquidity of underlying assets — it merely creates a digital representation but does not "magically" turn illiquid assets into liquid instruments.
Uniswap as a New Center of Gravity
Particular attention should be paid to the role of Uniswap. According to forecasts, this platform could become a central hub for trading tokenized RWAs. Institutional players are likely to choose Uniswap due to its impeccable reputation and high level of security. Partnerships with traditional finance could narrow the market capitalization gap between Uniswap and Coinbase, marking a landmark event for the entire sector.
My comment: The forecast looks ambitious but realistic, provided that issues with liquidity fragmentation and regulatory clarity are resolved. RWA tokenization is not just a trend but a fundamental shift that will redefine the structure of global finance. However, investors should remember that a 37-fold growth implies not only potential but also tremendous volatility along the way to this goal.
