Spain's national team dominates prediction markets: 92% to win the opening match of the 2026 World Cup and leading the race for the title
Decentralized prediction markets Polymarket and Kalshi show an overwhelming advantage for the Spanish national team in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. Ahead of the opening Group H match against tournament debutant Cape Verde, the Spanish are rated as clear favorites both in the individual game and in the race for the main trophy.
The tournament, which for the first time in history will be held across three countries — the USA, Canada, and Mexico — will feature a record 48 teams. For Cape Verde, this is a historic debut at the World Cup, while Spain approaches the tournament as the reigning European champion and winner of the 2010 World Cup.
Betting market for the Spain vs. Cape Verde match
Trading volume on Polymarket for this match has already exceeded $14.59 million. The contract for a Spain win is trading at $0.93, corresponding to a 93% probability. A draw is valued by the market at only $0.055 (5.5%), and a Cape Verde success at a symbolic $0.023 (2.3%). On the Kalshi platform, the picture is similar: 92% for a "La Roja" win, 7% for a draw, and just 3% for an upset by the underdog. Market volume on this platform is around $8.29 million.
Analysts are unanimous: the class difference between the teams is enormous. The Spanish are listed with a -2.5 goal handicap, and the total is set at 3.5. Cape Verde, making its first World Cup appearance, looks like a clear underdog, and the market fairly reflects this in the prices.
Spain — the main favorite for the title
An even more telling picture emerges in the tournament winner market. Polymarket estimates Spain's chances of winning the World Cup at 16.3%. France follows closely at 16.2%, with Portugal (10.8%) and England (9.7%) rounding out the top three. Argentina, the reigning champion, completes the top five with 8.1%. The total volume of bets on the winner on Polymarket has exceeded $2.35 billion.
Kalshi's forecasts confirm this trend: Spain leads with 17.4%, France is second (16.4%), and Portugal is third (11.6%). Market volume on this platform is around $283 million.
In addition to the day's central match, other games will take place on June 15. On Polymarket, a Belgium win over Egypt is priced at 62 cents, Uruguay over Saudi Arabia at 68 cents, and in the Iran vs. New Zealand pairing, Iran is the favorite at 54 cents. Kalshi gives similar percentages: Belgium — 62%, Uruguay — 67%, Iran — 52%.
Commentary from Cryptalist analyst: Prediction markets, and especially Polymarket, are becoming an increasingly accurate tool for assessing teams' real chances, outpacing traditional bookmaker lines in terms of liquidity depth and reaction speed. Current quotes reflect not just hype around Spain, but a fundamental assessment of squad strength and current form. However, it's worth remembering that football is a sport with a high degree of randomness, and debutants sometimes spring surprises. Nevertheless, the Spanish look like the most balanced contender at the moment.
