IREN acquires Nostrum Group: strategic entry into the European energy market with 490 MW

Mining company IREN has completed the acquisition of Ingenostrum, S.L. (Nostrum Group), a developer of data centers (DCs) for artificial intelligence. This deal marks IREN's strategic entry into the European continent, adding approximately 490 MW of secured capacity in Spain to its portfolio, as well as a significant pipeline of prospective projects.
The purchase of Nostrum Group is not merely a geographic expansion. It provides direct access to energy infrastructure critical for scaling both mining operations and high-performance computing for AI. 490 MW is a substantial asset that will allow IREN to diversify risks associated with congestion in North American grids and gain access to more stable and potentially cheaper energy sources in Europe.
The Nostrum team, comprising over 50 specialists, will fully transition to IREN's staff and continue its operations under the mining company's brand. This ensures the preservation of expertise and operational continuity in the new market.
Analytical commentary: This move by IREN is an exemplary case of vertical integration and geographic diversification in the modern crypto industry. Instead of merely increasing hashrate in already developed territories, the company is acquiring ready-made infrastructure with power supply in a region where the regulatory environment for mining and AI projects is becoming increasingly favorable. This is not just a purchase of capacity, but the acquisition of a strategic foothold for future growth in Europe, where demand for AI computing resources is growing exponentially. From my perspective, this is one of the most well-thought-out deals in the sector over the past few quarters.
