China launches mass production of silicon-28: a breakthrough for quantum computing

Beijing is making a confident stride in the quantum technology race. China National Nuclear Corporation has officially announced the start of mass production of silicon-28, an isotope with a purity exceeding 99.99%. This is the first large-scale production of such material in the country's history, and it has direct implications for the future of quantum computing.
Why is silicon-28 critically important?
Unlike ordinary silicon, which contains impurities of the silicon-29 isotope that create magnetic interference, silicon-28 is virtually free of these defects. In silicon-based quantum computers, this means a radical reduction in noise levels and increased stability of qubits. Without such material, scaling quantum systems remains extremely difficult — every extra impurity atom can destroy a fragile quantum state.
Geopolitical and technological context
China has long been striving for technological independence, and this step is no exception. Previously, the main suppliers of high-purity silicon-28 were Russia and some Western companies. Now Beijing is acquiring its own strategic resource, which can be used not only for scientific projects but also to create quantum computing capabilities capable of breaking modern cryptographic algorithms. For the crypto industry, this is a signal: post-quantum security is no longer a distant theory.
