Decentralized finance on track to $2.7 trillion: Standard Chartered analysis

The decentralized finance (DeFi) market is on the verge of colossal growth. According to the latest analysis, the total value locked (TVL) in protocols could reach $2.7 trillion by the end of 2030. This represents an almost 37-fold increase from current levels. The main catalysts for this explosive growth will be tokenized real-world assets (RWA) and improvements in on-chain infrastructure.

A key factor currently limiting DeFi's potential is the low degree of integration of existing digital assets. Currently, only 3% of the total supply of stablecoins and 10% of RWAs are actively used in decentralized protocols. It is projected that by 2030, this share could grow to 30%, which will drive capital inflows.

However, the path to such an ambitious goal is not without obstacles. Achieving a TVL of $2.7 trillion will require a ninefold increase in the share of tokenized value involved in DeFi. Industry experts rightly point to the risks of liquidity fragmentation. Issuing the same asset on multiple blockchains creates isolated liquidity pools, increasing operational costs and complicating efficient pricing.

Institutional View of the Future

Standard Chartered highlights Uniswap as a potential hub for RWA trading. Its reputation and high level of security make this platform attractive to institutional players. Partnerships with traditional finance could allow Uniswap to close the market capitalization gap with centralized giants like Coinbase. This is a significant signal: DeFi protocols are beginning to be perceived as serious competitors, not just experimental sandboxes.

It is worth noting that simple tokenization is not enough to automatically create liquidity from illiquid assets. It is not a "magic wand." The growth of DeFi will require not only technological innovation but also deep integration with the traditional financial system, underscoring a shift in institutional advisors' interest from pure bitcoin to stablecoins and RWAs.

Expert Commentary: Standard Chartered's forecast looks ambitious, but it reflects the real trajectory of the industry. The main risk lies not so much in technological complexity as in regulatory uncertainty and the need to create unified standards for tokenization. Without solving the problem of fragmented liquidity, which colleagues at Axis rightly noted, growth may not be as linear as assumed.
