IREN enters the European market: acquisition of Nostrum Group and 490 MW of new capacity

Mining company IREN has completed the strategic acquisition of Spanish AI data center developer Ingenostrum, S.L. (Nostrum Group). This deal marks IREN's confident entry into the European market, adding approximately 490 MW of secured electrical capacity located in Spain to its portfolio. Additionally, the company gains a significant pipeline of future projects, substantially strengthening its position in the high-performance computing segment.
Synergy of Mining and AI
The acquisition of Nostrum Group is not merely a geographic expansion. It is a logical step in the context of the global transformation of the mining industry, where more and more players are seeking to diversify their businesses with AI capacity. IREN acquires not only physical infrastructure but also a team of over 50 highly qualified Nostrum specialists, who will continue their work under the IREN brand. This preserves expertise and accelerates the integration of assets.
To me, this move by IREN appears particularly well-considered. The European market, and Spain in particular, offers not only access to renewable energy sources, which is critical for reducing the carbon footprint, but also a relatively stable regulatory environment. 490 MW is a substantial volume that will allow IREN to compete with major players not only in mining but also in the field of cloud computing for AI.
My analysis: The merger of mining and AI infrastructure is becoming the dominant trend of 2024-2025. IREN is betting on a future where data centers will serve both industries simultaneously. This acquisition not only increases the company's hash rate but also creates a platform for long-term growth in the high-margin AI services segment. In the coming quarters, similar moves from other major public miners should be expected.
