IREN completes acquisition of Nostrum Group: Entry into the European market with 490 MW capacity

Mining company IREN has completed the strategic acquisition of a data center developer for artificial intelligence with a grid connection — Ingenostrum, S.L. (Nostrum Group). This deal marks a significant step in IREN's expansion: the company not only enters the European market but also gains access to a substantial energy portfolio.
As a result of the acquisition, IREN adds approximately 490 MW of secured capacity in Spain, while also expanding its project portfolio in the region. This is not just a one-time investment — the acquisition includes the Nostrum team of over 50 specialists, who will continue their work under the IREN brand. Thus, the miner gains not only infrastructure but also expertise in the design and operation of high-density data centers, which is critically important for the development of the AI direction.
From a market dynamics perspective, this acquisition appears particularly timely. The European market, with its stringent regulatory requirements and growing demand for energy-efficient AI solutions, is becoming a key arena for major players. By leveraging Nostrum's Spanish base, IREN gains access to relatively cheap and "green" energy, which is a competitive advantage amid tightening environmental standards.
Analytical commentary: From my perspective, this is not just a deal to purchase capacity. It is a bid for leadership in the segment of hybrid data centers, where mining and AI computing will coexist. 490 MW in Spain is a serious asset that, with proper management, can ensure IREN's sustainable growth for years to come. However, the key success factor will be the integration of the Nostrum team: 50 experienced engineers are not just personnel, but bearers of technology, without which scaling in Europe would be significantly more difficult.
