IREN completes the acquisition of Nostrum Group: entering the European market with 490 MW of capacity

IREN's strategic move to acquire the Spanish developer of data centers for artificial intelligence, Ingenostrum, S.L. (known as Nostrum Group), has been finalized. This deal not only expands the miner's geographic footprint—it marks a confident entry into the European market with the immediate addition of approximately 490 MW of secured energy capacity in Spain.
The acquisition of Nostrum Group provides not only access to ready-made infrastructure but also a significant portfolio of promising projects. For IREN, which previously focused on the North American region, Spain becomes a key foothold in Europe. Given the current regulatory dynamics and access to renewable energy sources, this region appears particularly attractive for scaling operations.
Importantly, the Nostrum team, comprising over 50 highly qualified specialists, will be fully integrated into IREN's structure and will continue operating under the mining company's brand. This ensures the retention of expertise in designing and operating data centers for AI, which is critical for diversifying the business beyond pure mining.
Analytical commentary: From my perspective, this move by IREN demonstrates a mature approach to risk management. Entering the European market by acquiring an existing player with a solid portfolio of capacity is a far more effective strategy than organic construction from scratch. Particularly valuable is that the deal includes competencies in AI infrastructure, allowing IREN to diversify its revenue and reduce dependence on cryptocurrency volatility. 490 MW in Spain is a serious bid for regional leadership.
