China launches mass production of ultra-pure silicon-28: a breakthrough for quantum computing

The China National Nuclear Corporation has announced the start of mass production of silicon-28 with an isotopic purity exceeding 99.99%. This event marks the first instance of independent large-scale production of this material within the country.

Silicon-28 is an isotope critically important for creating silicon-based quantum computers. Its unique property lies in its ability to significantly reduce the level of magnetic interference, which directly affects the stability of qubits — the fundamental units of quantum information. In standard silicon, which contains impurities of other isotopes (e.g., silicon-29), these impurities create noise that destabilizes quantum states. A purity of 99.99% practically eliminates this factor.

From a long-term strategic perspective, this move by Beijing is not just a technological success, but a clear signal of its intention to take a leading position in the quantum computing race. For the crypto industry, this has a dual significance: on one hand, progress in quantum technologies threatens existing cryptographic algorithms (e.g., ECDSA used in Bitcoin), but on the other hand, it paves the way for new, post-quantum security standards.

My expert opinion: China is systematically moving towards technological sovereignty in critically important sectors. The mass production of silicon-28 reduces dependence on imports and accelerates the development of quantum processors. For the cryptocurrency market, this is a reminder: the time for implementing quantum-resistant cryptographic solutions is shrinking faster than many expect.
