China launches mass production of silicon-28: a breakthrough for quantum computing
The China National Nuclear Corporation has officially announced the start of mass production of silicon-28 with an isotopic purity exceeding 99.99%. This event marks the first time in the country's history that this material has been independently produced on a large scale.
From a technological perspective, silicon-28 is a critically important component for building silicon-based quantum computers. Its key advantage is its ability to significantly reduce the level of magnetic interference, which directly improves the stability of qubits—the fundamental units of quantum information. As the global race for quantum supremacy intensifies, this move by Beijing appears strategically calculated.
For the crypto industry, this has a dual significance. On the one hand, the development of quantum computing poses a long-term threat to current encryption algorithms, including those that protect blockchain networks. On the other hand, it is China—which previously imposed strict restrictions on cryptocurrency mining and trading—that is now demonstrating progress in technologies capable of reshaping the very architecture of digital assets.
My expert assessment: Although current silicon-28 production does not yet pose an immediate threat to cryptography, investors and blockchain developers should closely monitor these developments.
