China launches mass production of ultra-pure silicon-28: a breakthrough for quantum computing

The China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has announced the start of industrial production of silicon-28 with an isotopic purity exceeding 99.99%. This event marks the first time in China's history that it has independently achieved large-scale production of this material.

Silicon-28 is a critically important component for creating silicon-based quantum computers. Its unique properties allow for a significant reduction in magnetic interference levels, which directly affects the stability of qubits — the fundamental elements of quantum computing. Improving qubit stability, in turn, paves the way for creating more powerful and reliable quantum systems.

Until now, the production of ultra-pure silicon-28 was concentrated in the hands of a limited number of Western companies, creating a dependency for China's quantum industry. Now, Beijing is not only eliminating this vulnerability but also laying the foundation for its own technological sovereignty in one of the most promising fields of science.

From the perspective of global competition, this move by China can be seen as a direct challenge to leaders in quantum technology, including the US and Europe. Mass production of silicon-28 will accelerate the development of commercial quantum computers, which, in the long term, could radically change the landscape of high-performance computing.

My analysis: The quantum computing market is on the verge of explosive growth, and control over the supply chain of key materials, such as silicon-28, is becoming a strategic advantage. China is demonstrating its readiness to invest not only in software and algorithms but also in the fundamental materials science base. This is a systematic approach that will likely allow the Celestial Empire to occupy one of the leading positions in the quantum race by the end of the current decade.
