IREN enters the European market: acquisition of Nostrum Group and 490 MW of new capacity

майнинг mining

Mining company IREN has made a strategic move by completing a deal to acquire Spanish AI data center developer Ingenostrum, S.L., known as Nostrum Group. This acquisition not only expands IREN's geographic footprint but also marks its full-fledged entry into the European market.

Key deal parameters: As a result of the acquisition, IREN gains access to a project portfolio secured with grid connections totaling approximately 490 MW. All of these assets are located in Spain. For comparison, this is comparable to the capacity of several large industrial mining farms or small nuclear reactors.

Team integration and synergy

It is important to note that IREN is not just buying infrastructure. The Nostrum team, comprising over 50 highly qualified specialists, will fully transition to IREN's staff and continue its operations under the parent company's brand. This indicates that IREN is betting on retaining expertise and local knowledge, which is critical for operating in jurisdictions with different regulatory norms.

From a market perspective, this move appears to be a logical continuation of the trend toward consolidation and diversification. Miners are increasingly seeking not just cheap energy, but comprehensive solutions including ready-made infrastructure and personnel. Spain, with its well-developed network of renewable energy sources, is becoming one of the key hubs for "green" mining and HPC (high-performance computing).

My expert opinion: The purchase of Nostrum is not just a capacity expansion deal. It demonstrates that IREN sees its future not only in Bitcoin mining but also in providing computing services for AI. 490 MW in Spain is an excellent springboard for competing for contracts with European tech giants, who are increasingly in need of local, rather than overseas, data centers.
