IREN acquires Nostrum Group and opens a European front with 490 MW capacity

Mining giant IREN has achieved a strategic breakthrough by completing the acquisition of Spanish AI data center developer Ingenostrum, S.L., better known as Nostrum Group. This move marks not just a geographic expansion, but a full-fledged entry into the European market with a solid energy foundation.

As a result of the acquisition, IREN gains access to approximately 490 MW of secured capacity located in Spain. This includes not only ready-to-operate facilities but also a portfolio of promising projects, which is critically important in the global race for energy resources for high-performance computing. For the mining industry, access to cheap and stable energy is a key factor in competitiveness, and this deal significantly strengthens IREN's position.

Human Capital and Technology Synergy

Importantly, along with the infrastructure, IREN also acquires intellectual capital. The Nostrum team, comprising over 50 highly qualified specialists, fully transitions to the buyer's staff and will continue its operations under the IREN brand. This indicates that the company is not just buying "hardware" but is investing in the expertise needed to operate next-generation data centers focused on both mining and AI tasks.

Analytical Commentary: From my perspective, this deal is a brilliant example of risk diversification for a major miner. IREN is not just increasing its hashrate but is creating a platform for providing HPC (High-Performance Computing) services. The European market, with its strict regulations and high electricity prices, requires a special approach, and having a local team with experience operating under these conditions is a huge advantage. This is not just a purchase of capacity; it is the acquisition of a key to the European energy landscape.
