IREN completes strategic acquisition of Nostrum Group: entry into the European energy market with 490 MW capacity

Mining company IREN has officially completed the acquisition of Spanish AI data center developer Ingenostrum, S.L. (Nostrum Group). This deal marks IREN's strategic entry into the European market and significantly expands its energy portfolio.
As a result of the acquisition, IREN gains access to approximately 490 MW of secured energy capacity located in Spain. This includes not only ready-made facilities but also an additional portfolio of promising projects already under development. This allows the company to significantly strengthen its position in the high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence segments, where access to cheap and stable electricity is a critical factor.
It is important to note that the Nostrum team, comprising over 50 highly qualified specialists, will fully transition to IREN's staff and continue working under the parent company's brand. This is not merely a purchase of assets but an acquisition of expertise and local experience, which is critically important for successful expansion in Europe.
Analytical Commentary
This move by IREN is a vivid example of market consolidation and the transition of mining giants to a vertical integration model. Instead of building infrastructure from scratch in a new region, the company acquires a ready-made team and energy contracts. 490 MW is not just a number; it is a serious lever for scaling bitcoin mining operations and, crucially, for serving AI clients who require enormous computing resources. In my view, this trend will only intensify: whoever controls energy resources controls the future of the digital economy.
