IREN enters the European market: acquisition of Nostrum Group adds 490 MW of capacity

Mining company IREN has completed the strategic acquisition of AI data center developer Ingenostrum, S.L. (Nostrum Group). This deal marks IREN's direct entry into the European market and significantly expands its infrastructure potential.
As a result of the acquisition, IREN gained access to a portfolio of secured energy capacities in Spain totaling approximately 490 MW. These are not just numbers — they are ready-made sites with grid connections, which is critically important for scaling operations amid a global energy shortage. Additionally, the portfolio includes further projects that will be developed under IREN's management.
Importantly, the Nostrum Group team, comprising over 50 highly qualified specialists, will fully transition to IREN's staff and continue operations under the new brand. This indicates that the company is betting not only on hardware but also on human capital, which is a prudent move in the fiercely competitive talent market.
Analytical Commentary
From my perspective, this acquisition is not merely geographic expansion. IREN is clearly signaling a shift in priorities to the market: the company is actively diversifying toward AI infrastructure rather than just traditional mining. Spain, with its relatively cheap renewable energy and favorable regulations, is becoming a new hub for such operators. Given the current consolidation in the sector, this move could give IREN a significant competitive advantage over smaller players.
