China has launched mass production of silicon-28: a breakthrough for quantum computing
The China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has officially announced the start of mass production of silicon-28 with an isotopic purity exceeding 99.99%. This event marks the first time the country has independently achieved large-scale production of this material, representing a strategic step in the race for quantum supremacy.
Silicon-28 is an isotope critically important for creating stable silicon-based quantum computers. Unlike natural silicon, which contains impurities of the silicon-29 isotope that create magnetic interference, ultra-pure silicon-28 significantly reduces noise levels and increases the coherence time of qubits — the fundamental units of quantum information. The longer a qubit maintains its state, the more complex calculations it can perform.
Why is this important for cryptography?
The development of quantum computers directly threatens modern cryptographic algorithms, including those underlying Bitcoin and Ethereum.
