IREN acquires Nostrum Group: a new stage of expansion into the European continent

Mining giant IREN has finalized the acquisition of Spanish AI data center developer Ingenostrum, S.L., better known as Nostrum Group. This strategic move marks not just an expansion of its asset portfolio, but a full-fledged entry into the European market — a region with strict energy regulations and high demand for computing power.
As a result of the deal, IREN gains access to approximately 490 megawatts of secured energy capacity located in Spain. This includes not only ready-to-operate facilities but also a solid portfolio of prospective projects, allowing the company to scale flexibly within the European energy infrastructure. This is particularly critical amid the global shortage of available capacity for hosting ASIC farms and GPU clusters.
Human Capital and Synergy
Importantly, along with the infrastructure, IREN is acquiring a talented team. The entire staff of Nostrum Group, comprising over 50 specialists, will join the mining company's structure and continue working under the IREN brand. This is not merely a formal merger — it is an integration of expertise in designing and operating AI data centers, which is crucial for diversifying the business beyond traditional Bitcoin mining.
My conclusion: The purchase of Nostrum is not an impulsive deal but a well-calculated move. IREN is not just buying "kilowatts"; it is buying access to the European jurisdiction with its strict yet stable rules of the game, as well as a team capable of building highly efficient facilities for AI workloads. In the long term, this could give the company a significant competitive advantage over miners stuck in the "gray zone" of energy consumption.
