IREN acquires Nostrum Group: a strategic breakthrough into the European energy market
Mining corporation IREN has completed the strategic acquisition of an AI data center developer — Ingenostrum, S.L. (Nostrum Group). This deal marks not just a geographic expansion, but a full-fledged entry of the company into the European continent with a substantial energy asset.
As a result of the acquisition, IREN gains access to approximately 490 MW of secured capacity in Spain. This involves not only ready-made facilities but also a portfolio of promising projects, which is critically important amid the global shortage of energy resources for mining and AI. The integration of European infrastructure will allow IREN to diversify risks associated with dependence on a single region and gain access to more stable and cheaper energy sources.
The Nostrum team, comprising over 50 highly qualified specialists, will fully transition to IREN's staff. These employees will continue working under the mining company's brand, ensuring a smooth integration of technologies and management processes. Retaining key personnel is a crucial success factor, as Nostrum is known for its expertise in building and operating high-tech data centers oriented toward AI workloads.
Analytical assessment: This deal is a classic example of vertical integration in the crypto industry. IREN is not just buying capacity; it is acquiring technological expertise and ready-made infrastructure to serve both mining and AI projects. In the long term, this could give the company a significant competitive advantage, especially against the backdrop of growing demand for computing resources for training neural networks in Europe.
