IREN completes acquisition of Nostrum Group: entry into the European energy market and 490 MW of new capacity

A major player in the cryptocurrency mining sector, IREN, has officially completed the acquisition of Spanish AI data center developer Ingenostrum, S.L., known as Nostrum Group. This strategic deal marks IREN's direct entry into the European market and significantly strengthens its position in the global high-performance computing infrastructure.
As a result of the acquisition, IREN has gained access to a portfolio of secured energy capacities in Spain totaling approximately 490 MW. This is not just about available space, but fully prepared sites with existing grid connections, which is a critical asset amid fierce competition for energy resources in Europe. Additionally, the company now holds a supplementary portfolio of prospective projects that can be used both for expanding mining operations and for developing cloud services and AI workloads.
Human Capital and Synergy
Importantly, the deal includes not only infrastructure. The entire Nostrum team, comprising over 50 highly qualified specialists, will join IREN's staff and continue working under the parent company's brand. This ensures the retention of expertise in data center design, energy management, and interaction with local regulators, which is especially valuable for operating on the new European continent for IREN.
My analysis: This deal is a classic example of vertical integration and geographic diversification. Acquiring ready-made capacities in Spain, a country with a well-developed renewable energy network, allows IREN not only to reduce risks associated with cryptocurrency market volatility but also to gain access to cheap "green" energy. It also signals to the market that mining giants are increasingly competing for infrastructure with traditional data centers, especially in the AI field. I believe that in the next 12-18 months, we will see several more similar cross-border M&A deals, as control over energy grids becomes the key success factor.
