China launches mass production of ultra-pure silicon-28: a breakthrough for quantum computing

China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has announced the start of serial production of silicon-28 isotope with record purity — above 99.99%. This is the first time in the country's history that this material has been independently produced on a large scale, marking a significant shift in the global technology race.
Silicon-28 is a silicon isotope lacking nuclear spin, making it an ideal candidate for creating stable qubits in quantum computers. Unlike natural silicon, which contains impurities of the silicon-29 isotope that create magnetic interference, ultra-pure silicon-28 significantly reduces noise levels and increases qubit coherence time. This is critical for scaling quantum systems that could potentially crack modern cryptographic algorithms.
For the crypto industry, this step has dual significance. On one hand, progress in quantum computing accelerates the emergence of threats to RSA and ECDSA — the foundations of blockchain security. On the other hand, China, already dominant in traditional semiconductor production, gains a strategic advantage in developing quantum chips.
