IREN enters the European market: acquisition of Nostrum Group and 490 MW of new capacity

Mining company IREN has completed the strategic acquisition of Spanish AI data center developer Ingenostrum, S.L., known as Nostrum Group. This deal marks not just a geographic expansion, but a full-fledged entry by IREN into the European market with a substantial energy portfolio.
As a result of the acquisition, IREN gains access to approximately 490 MW of secured capacity located in Spain. This includes not only ready-made facilities but also a portfolio of promising projects that will allow the company to scale its operations in the region. For the mining industry, where access to cheap and stable energy is a key factor, such a move appears particularly forward-looking against the backdrop of global regulatory tightening and competition for resources.
It is important to note that the Nostrum Group team, comprising over 50 highly qualified specialists, will fully transition to IREN's staff and continue working under the buyer's brand. This preserves operational expertise and accelerates integration, which is critical for the rapid deployment of new data centers.
From a market dynamics perspective, this acquisition strengthens IREN's position as one of the major players actively diversifying its business beyond pure mining towards AI infrastructure. The European development vector, especially in Spain with its advanced renewable energy sector, opens access to new contracts and institutional clients.
My analysis: This is not just a purchase of capacity, but a strategic move that allows IREN to establish a foothold in Europe while many competitors are focused on the US. The integration of the Nostrum team and 490 MW is a strong argument for future negotiations with energy suppliers and AI sector partners. In the current market conditions, control over energy resources is becoming the main asset, and IREN understands this perfectly.
