IREN acquires Nostrum Group: strategic entry into the European energy market with 490 MW capacity

майнинг mining

Mining company IREN has completed the acquisition of Spanish data center developer for artificial intelligence, Ingenostrum, S.L., known under the Nostrum Group brand. This deal marks not just a geographic expansion, but a systematic entry by IREN into the European market with immediate access to a portfolio of secured energy capacities.

The key asset of the deal is approximately 490 MW of ready-to-connect capacities in Spain. This is not just a number: for a mining company that is increasingly diversifying into high-performance computing (HPC) and AI, access to stable and cheap electricity in Europe is a critical competitive advantage. The Spanish energy market, with its surplus of renewable energy and favorable regulatory climate for data centers, becomes an ideal base for scaling.

Integration of Team and Technologies

It is important to note that the deal includes not only infrastructure but also human capital. The Nostrum team, comprising over 50 highly qualified specialists, fully transitions to IREN's staff and will continue to operate under the mining company's brand. This indicates a strategy of deep integration, rather than a simple asset acquisition. Nostrum is known for its expertise in designing and building energy-efficient data centers for AI—skills that are becoming increasingly scarce in the industry.

From my perspective, this move by IREN is an exemplary case of market consolidation. Instead of building capacities from scratch in an unstable jurisdiction, the company acquires a ready-made, operational business with an experienced team and already connected energy resources. This sharply reduces time-to-market and mitigates geopolitical risks associated with mining in the US. Nostrum's portfolio of additional projects also gives IREN an option for further organic expansion in Europe without needing to find new sites and go through lengthy bureaucratic procedures.

My analysis: The purchase of Nostrum is not just a deal to acquire megawatts. It is a strategic maneuver that transforms IREN from a regional miner into a global operator of infrastructure for blockchain and AI. Control over 490 MW in Spain, given current electricity prices in Europe, could provide IREN with margins unavailable to many competitors, especially as mining regulation tightens in North America.
