IREN acquires Nostrum Group: strategic entry into the European market with 490 MW capacity

Mining corporation IREN has completed the strategic acquisition of Spanish AI data center developer Ingenostrum, S.L., known as Nostrum Group. This deal marks not just a portfolio expansion, but a full-fledged entry into the European continent with a strong energy foothold.
Key Deal Parameters
As a result of the acquisition, IREN gains access to a pool of secured capacity in Spain totaling approximately 490 MW. This includes not only ready-made facilities but also projects under development, giving the miner flexibility to scale operations in the region. It is important to emphasize that these capacities already have grid connections, which is critical given the shortage of quality infrastructure for mining and AI data centers.
Team Integration
The key asset of the deal is human capital. The Nostrum team, comprising over 50 highly qualified specialists, will fully transition to IREN's staff. They will continue working under the mining company's brand, ensuring continuity and rapid deployment of projects in the new territory. This is not merely a purchase of assets, but an acquisition of expertise in the European energy market and AI infrastructure construction.
Analytical Perspective
From my point of view, this move by IREN is a model of smart diversification. Entering the European market, where the regulatory environment is becoming increasingly innovation-friendly and demand for AI computing power is growing exponentially, seems timely. 490 MW is a serious bid for leadership in the region. However, the main challenge for IREN now is to effectively integrate the new team and projects into its operational model while maintaining the pace of construction and capacity commissioning. If successful, we will see a new strong player in the European AI and mining infrastructure market.
