IREN enters the European market: acquisition of Nostrum Group and 490 MW of capacity in Spain

майнинг mining

Mining company IREN has completed a strategically important deal to acquire the artificial intelligence data center developer Ingenostrum, S.L., known as Nostrum Group. This acquisition marks IREN's official entry into the European market, a logical step amid global competition for energy resources and infrastructure.

Deal Details and Scale

Under the agreement, IREN gains access to a portfolio of secured capacities in Spain, totaling approximately 490 MW. It is important to emphasize that these are not just raw projects, but sites with existing grid connections. This is a critical factor, as access to cheap and stable energy is the main asset for miners and AI center operators in the current market cycle.

In addition to the capacities, IREN is also integrating the Nostrum team, which includes over 50 highly qualified specialists. All personnel will continue their work under the IREN brand, ensuring a smooth transition and preserving expertise in data center design and operation.

Analysis and Prospects

From my perspective, this move is not just geographic expansion. IREN is diversifying its business while simultaneously strengthening its position in the high-performance computing (HPC) and AI segments. Spain is becoming a new hub for mining and AI infrastructure due to relatively low electricity prices and a developed network of renewable sources. The acquisition of Nostrum Group allows IREN not only to increase its hashrate but also to gain a ready-made platform for providing cloud computing services to European clients.

My expert opinion: This deal demonstrates the maturity of the market. Major players like IREN are transitioning from simple mining to building vertically integrated energy and computing platforms. In the long term, control over 490 MW in Europe is a serious bid for leadership in the next cycle of industry growth.
