IREN acquires Nostrum Group and establishes itself in Europe with 490 MW of capacity

Mining company IREN has officially completed the acquisition of Spanish AI data center developer Ingenostrum, S.L. (Nostrum Group). This deal marks IREN's strategic entry into the European market, adding approximately 490 MW of secured energy capacity located in Spain to its portfolio.

Deal Details and Strategic Implications

In addition to the ready-to-operate capacity, IREN gains access to Nostrum's portfolio of prospective projects, opening opportunities for further scaling in the region. The acquisition allows the company not only to diversify its geographic presence but also to strengthen its position in the high-performance computing (HPC) and AI infrastructure segment, which is becoming a key growth driver for mining giants.

Importantly, Nostrum's team of over 50 specialists will fully transition to IREN's staff. This ensures the preservation of expertise and operational continuity at the new facilities. Integrating an experienced team that already has established connections with local energy grids and regulators significantly reduces the risks associated with entering a new continent.

From a fundamental analysis perspective, this move appears extremely timely. Amidst intensifying competition for energy resources in North America and growing institutional interest in AI infrastructure, IREN is betting on diversification and access to stable energy assets in Europe. Spain, with its developed solar and wind energy sectors, offers unique opportunities for "green" mining, enhancing the company's appeal to ESG-oriented investors.

My analysis: This deal is not just a purchase of capacity, but a strategic maneuver to capture a key logistics and energy hub in Southern Europe. IREN is clearly preparing for the post-halving reality, where efficiency and access to cheap energy will determine player survival. The acquisition of Nostrum, with its team and projects, could give IREN a 2-3 year lead over competitors who are just beginning to eye the European market.
