A quadrillion for Musk: $998.9 trillion short, but factories on the Moon and Mars will fix it all
Elon Musk is seriously discussing the status of a quadrillionaire, and, oddly enough, calls it "quite realistic." For now, the billionaire is short by approximately $998.9 trillion to reach the coveted quadrillion dollars — a figure that sounds fantastic even for the richest person on the planet. However, Musk does not dispute the calculations, but rather supports the idea: in his opinion, such sums can only be accumulated through production beyond Earth.
In a recent discussion on social media, the entrepreneur clearly outlined the upper limit of wealth creation on a single planet. "It's realistic, but it definitely requires factories on the Moon and Mars," he stated. With this, Musk made it clear that traditional "terrestrial" assets would not allow reaching such a scale. The key question he raises is what currency will even mean in the future. According to him, by that time, dollars will no longer be a currency. "Only mass and energy," the entrepreneur emphasized.
The Logic of Space Expansion
All these statements come against the backdrop of SpaceX's rapid growth. The company conducted a record IPO with a valuation of $2 trillion on the Nasdaq and briefly entered the top six most valuable companies in the U.S. Musk previously predicted that by 2030, SpaceX's revenue could reach $1 trillion, although in 2025 the company expects to earn $18.7 billion. Under a contract with SpaceX, he will receive 200 million shares with enhanced voting rights if a permanent colony of at least one million people is established on Mars. The first crew for a flight around Mars has already been formed, including a crypto billionaire.
Musk did not miss the opportunity to joke that he would finally acquire that very "volcanic lair" he has repeatedly mentioned publicly with a smile. Presenting the boldest ideas through references to science fiction is his signature style.
Expert opinion from Cryptalist: Musk's idea that value will be measured not in fiat money, but in mass and energy, echoes the fundamental principles of resource economics. If humanity truly ventures beyond Earth, traditional currencies will lose their meaning — their place will be taken by tokenized assets backed by real resources. For the crypto industry, this is a signal: the future lies in decentralized systems capable of servicing interplanetary transactions. Musk is once again playing ahead of the curve, setting trends for decades to come.
