Sarvam burst into the "unicorn" club: Indian AI giant raised $234 million

What is cryptocurrency? Explaining in simple terms

Indian artificial intelligence startup Sarvam has officially entered the prestigious "unicorn" club — companies valued at over $1 billion. The key driver of this status was a massive $234 million funding round, which propelled the startup's valuation to $1.5 billion.

HCLTech acted as the lead strategic investor, allocating $150 million to the project's development. Heavyweight players such as Bessemer Venture Partners, Khosla Ventures, and Peak XV Partners also joined the round. This is not just a liquidity injection — it is a signal of deep trust from institutional capital in Sarvam's vision.

Plans for $300 million and open-source models

Sarvam is not resting on its laurels — the company aims to bring the total Series B round to $300 million. Already in 2026, the startup released open-source models with 30 billion and 105 billion parameters. This is a direct challenge to the dominance of Western giants in the large language model segment.

The raised funds will be directed toward developing the next generation of models and, critically, expanding computing infrastructure. Amid a global GPU shortage and rising cloud computing costs, investments in computing power are becoming a key competitive advantage.

Analyst's comment: This round clearly demonstrates that the Indian AI ecosystem is rapidly gaining momentum. By betting on open-source and scaling parameters, Sarvam could become a serious competitor to American and Chinese projects. However, the main challenge lies not in raising capital, but in the ability to monetize these models in the real sector, especially given fierce competition from giants like OpenAI and Google DeepMind.
