QuEra announces the launch of the first fault-tolerant quantum computer in 2028

Quantum computing is taking another decisive step toward practical implementation. QuEra Computing, a developer of quantum systems based on neutral atoms, has announced plans to launch its first fault-tolerant quantum platform in 2028. The system, named Libra, will be deployed on the Amazon Braket cloud service.

This event is not just another technological announcement, but the result of an expanded strategic partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS). Libra will be available to cloud users as a service, significantly democratizing access to the most advanced computing capabilities.

Technical Specifications of Libra

According to published specifications, the Libra quantum computer will be built on the basis of more than 256 logical qubits. The key difference of this system from its predecessors is built-in error correction. The target logical error rate is set at 10⁻⁶. For comparison, this is several orders of magnitude higher than that of modern experimental quantum processors without active correction.

QuEra estimates that Libra will be able to perform about 1 million reliable logical quantum operations. This is a critically important metric that brings us closer to the era of commercially significant quantum computing.

Analytical Commentary

The launch of Libra in 2028 is an ambitious but quite realistic horizon. If QuEra manages to achieve the stated error correction metrics, we will witness a transition from noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices to truly fault-tolerant systems. From my perspective, the integration with AWS Braket is a smart move: it provides the necessary infrastructure and customer base.
