The British government has announced a radical step: the use of social networks will be completely banned for citizens under 16. The relevant regulations are planned to be adopted by the end of this year, with the first measures taking effect as early as spring 2027. The ban will be built on the "Australian model." It will cover all platforms with algorithmic feeds and user-generated content: Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and X. Key exceptions include the messengers WhatsApp and Signal, as well as educational, commercial platforms, and music streaming services. Thus, authorities are specifically targeting advertising and entertainment services where algorithms can exert uncontrolled influence on teenagers.
At the same time, rules for gaming platforms are being tightened: users under 16 will have live streaming and communication with strangers blocked. By July 2026, authorities promise to present solutions for a "digital curfew" and forced feed pauses for individuals under 18.
Special attention is being paid to AI platforms. Chatbots simulating romantic or sexual relationships will be required to set a minimum age of 18. This is a direct blow to the AI companion industry, which has been actively gaining momentum recently.
Political context and public reaction
Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the country is going further than any other in the world to "give children back their childhood." The initiative follows extensive public consultations involving over 116,000 people. Nine out of ten parents supported the ban, and two-thirds of young respondents agreed that teenagers should not use at least some of the platforms.
However, the reaction is mixed. Many teenagers, as well as representatives of Meta, YouTube, and Snapchat, have criticized the measures. They argue that bans only isolate young people, pushing them toward unregulated alternatives where parental control is absent. Telegram founder Pavel Durov also sharply criticized the move, stating that such measures will force children to use VPNs, granting access to much more dangerous content.
