The administration of Donald Trump has launched a large-scale AI initiative called "The Genesis Mission," which, as it turns out, directly impacts the U.S. nuclear weapons complex. The Department of Energy has published a list of 26 priority tasks, among which a whole block related to nuclear deterrence, weapons production, and non-proliferation stands out.
"The Genesis Mission" was presented as a program to accelerate scientific discoveries using artificial intelligence. However, an analysis of the documents shows that its ambitions extend far beyond purely scientific research. It involves creating an "American Platform for Science and Security" — an infrastructure that combines supercomputers from national laboratories, secure cloud environments, specialized models, and vast data arrays.
Nuclear Block: Seven Key Areas
In the list of tasks published on February 12, nuclear topics are represented by seven areas. Among them is the assessment of nuclear threats using a multimodal AI system, which should reduce response time from days to hours. Also planned is the digitization of historical data on nuclear tests over eight decades, including classified archives.
Special attention is given to increasing the throughput of research nuclear facilities. An AI "operating system" will manage experiments in real time. Additionally, the task is set to integrate design and production for nuclear deterrence — the cycle from design development to delivery of new weapons systems is promised to be reduced to "a fraction of the traditional time and cost."
In the field of non-proliferation, it is planned to use multimodal models and analytical agents to analyze satellite imagery and sensor data. Nuclear forensics is separately outlined — accelerated analysis of samples and debris to determine their origin. There is also a task to accelerate the development of materials for strategic deterrence, including new methods for purifying plutonium.
Red Lines: AI Does Not Get the "Button"
It is important to emphasize: none of the published documents discuss giving AI the right to make decisions about the use of nuclear weapons. As experts note, such scenarios are not even considered in the military or the National Security Council. The decision on a nuclear strike remains exclusively with humans.
However, the risks associated with the broader integration of AI into threat analysis, production, and planning cause justified concern. Researchers warn: AI should not be perceived as a source of guaranteed truth, especially when assessing real attacks. The acceleration of science could affect not only beneficial but also potentially dangerous areas, including biological and defense research.
My expert assessment: The "Genesis Mission" initiative is not just a technological breakthrough but a fundamental shift in the approach to national security. Integrating AI into the nuclear complex promises a colossal acceleration of processes but simultaneously creates new vulnerabilities.
