The administration of Donald Trump has launched a large-scale AI initiative called "The Genesis Mission," and as documents from the U.S. Department of Energy show, its ambitions extend far beyond purely scientific discoveries. The country's nuclear weapons complex has become the focus of attention.
The program, formally aimed at accelerating scientific breakthroughs with the help of artificial intelligence, contains a whole block dedicated to nuclear deterrence, weapons production, non-proliferation, and nuclear forensics within its first 26 tasks. This is not just laboratory experiments — it is the direct integration of AI into critically important defense mechanisms.
What does "The Genesis Mission" hide?
On November 24, 2025, Trump signed an executive order that launched new federal programs in the field of AI. The Department of Energy is obliged to deploy the "American Science and Security Platform" — a hybrid infrastructure combining supercomputers from national laboratories, secure cloud environments, and specialized models. Officially, this is needed to accelerate discoveries and strengthen national security.
The timeline is tight: within 60 days — identify at least 20 tasks, within 90 — inventory of computing resources, within 120 — initial datasets, and after 270 days the platform must demonstrate functionality for at least one task. And on February 12, 2026, the Department of Energy published a list of 26 areas.
The nuclear block: seven tasks at the intersection of science and war

- Optimization of high-hazard facility operations. Automation of safety requirements analysis and documentation, aiming to reduce planning time by more than 50%.
- Nuclear forensics. Accelerated analysis of samples and debris to determine the origin of materials after an incident.
Special attention is warranted by a separate task on accelerating the development of materials for strategic deterrence, which mentions AI agents for finding new methods of plutonium purification.
AI will not get the "button," but risks remain
It is important to emphasize: no document mentions transferring the right to make a decision on a nuclear strike to AI. As Herbert Lin, a senior research scholar at the Stanford Center for International Security, notes, no one in the military or the National Security Council is proposing to hand over the launch to an autonomous system. A Pentagon representative in February 2026 also confirmed that the decision remains with a human.
However, experts' concerns are related to the deeper integration of AI into threat analysis, production, and planning. Lin warns: AI cannot be perceived as a source of guaranteed truth, especially when assessing real attacks. Bahrad Soḥānsanj, a researcher at the Institute for Law and AI, adds that accelerating science could affect not only beneficial but also potentially dangerous areas, including biological and defense research.
