Binance at risk of losing the European market: Greece denies MiCA license

The world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, has faced a serious regulatory challenge in the European Union. According to available information, the Hellenic Capital Market Commission (HCMC) intends to reject the exchange's application for a license under the MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets) regulation. This decision, if officially adopted, would effectively block Binance's ability to legally serve clients in all 27 EU countries after July 1, 2026, when the transitional period expires.

The Collapse of Binance's European Ambitions

The MiCA system provides for a single license, allowing operations across the entire European Union without the need to obtain separate permits in each country. Binance submitted its application in Greece back in January 2026, betting on a local subsidiary. Several insiders indicate that the HCMC has already completed its review and is ready to issue a negative verdict.

Notably, as recently as February, Binance co-CEO Richard Teng expressed confidence in a successful outcome, emphasizing the team's high level of competence and the exchange's strong position in security. However, these arguments apparently failed to convince the regulator. No official notice of rejection has been received yet, but sources close to the process speak of the inevitability of such a decision.

Binance's Position and Market Implications

Binance representatives state that over the past 18 months, they have been constructively engaging with regulators and have fully met all MiCA requirements. The company emphasizes that the HCMC has not officially notified them of a negative decision, leaving room for maneuvering and potential appeals.

Nevertheless, even the threat of losing the European market is a powerful blow to Binance's position. Competitors that have already obtained MiCA licenses, such as Coinbase and Kraken, are in an advantageous position and can attract users who prioritize legal and regulated platforms.

BNB Price Dynamics

The European market is strategically important for Binance, and its potential loss could trigger increased volatility not only for the BNB token but also for the entire crypto market in the short term. EU investors should closely monitor the exchange's official announcements to timely assess risks for deposits, trading, and withdrawals after July 1.

Cryptalist Analytical Commentary: Greece's rejection is not just a local incident but a symptom of a global tightening of regulation. Binance, which has long operated in a "gray zone," is now forced to play by the rules, and it appears to be losing this round. Negotiations are still ongoing, but investors should seriously consider diversification and transitioning to already licensed platforms for operating in the European market.
