HPE combines Cray supercomputers with quantum technologies: a new stage of hybrid computing

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has announced the expansion of its strategic alliance with leading players in the quantum industry — Intel, IQM, Qblox, Quantinuum, QuEra Computing, Quantum Machines, Rigetti, and Riverlane. The goal of the collaboration is to create a full-fledged hybrid architecture that combines HPE Cray classical supercomputers with quantum processors.

As part of the initiative, HPE intends to integrate its flagship HPE Cray platform with quantum chips, qubit control systems, and advanced error correction solutions. The partners plan to deploy specialized testbeds that will enable joint algorithm development, software compatibility testing, and performance evaluation of hybrid systems in real-world conditions.

This step marks a transition from experimental quantum computing to practical, scalable solutions. The hybrid approach, where quantum accelerators work in tandem with powerful classical supercomputers, can dramatically accelerate problem-solving in areas such as cryptography, materials science, supply chain optimization, and modeling complex molecular structures.

Of particular interest to the crypto industry is the involvement of companies specializing in quantum error correction (e.g., Riverlane). This is critical for building reliable computing systems that could one day threaten modern encryption algorithms, but also pave the way for post-quantum cryptography.
