HPE combines Cray supercomputers with quantum systems: a new era of hybrid computing

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has made a strategic move by expanding its partnership with leading players in the quantum industry. The alliance includes Intel, IQM, Qblox, Quantinuum, QuEra Computing, Quantum Machines, Rigetti, and Riverlane. The goal is to create hybrid computing systems that combine classical supercomputers with quantum processors.

The key initiative is the integration of the HPE Cray platform with quantum chips, control systems, and error correction technologies. This is not just a hardware merger: the partners plan to build specialized testbeds. These will be used to develop hybrid algorithms, test software compatibility, and evaluate the real-world performance of such systems.

This approach marks a shift from theoretical research to practical engineering. Creating hybrid testbeds will not only identify architectural bottlenecks but also accelerate the commercialization of quantum-classical solutions. For the crypto industry, this is particularly important: hybrid computing could become the foundation for new cryptanalysis methods and, simultaneously, for developing protocols resistant to quantum threats.

My analysis: The market is beginning to realize that quantum computers will not replace classical ones but complement them. HPE and its partners are building an infrastructure that could radically change the landscape of high-performance computing in the next 3-5 years.
