HPE combines Cray supercomputers with quantum technologies: a new step in hybrid computing

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is taking a decisive step toward hybrid computing, expanding its partnership with leading players in the quantum industry. As part of a new initiative, the company will integrate its flagship supercomputing platform, HPE Cray, with quantum processors, control systems, and error correction solutions from Intel, IQM, Qblox, Quantinuum, QuEra Computing, Quantum Machines, Rigetti, and Riverlane.

Hybrid Architecture: Classical Power and Quantum Capabilities

The primary goal of this alliance is to create testbeds that enable collaborative algorithm development, verify software compatibility, and evaluate the performance of hybrid systems. This is not merely hardware integration but a full-fledged ecosystem where classical Cray supercomputers will work in tandem with quantum accelerators. Such an approach opens the door to solving problems inaccessible to traditional architectures, particularly in modeling complex molecules, logistics optimization, and financial modeling.

Key Participants and Their Roles

HPE's partners represent the full spectrum of quantum technologies, from superconducting processors (Rigetti, IQM) to photonic systems (QuEra) and ion traps (Quantinuum). Qblox and Quantum Machines are responsible for managing quantum qubits, while Riverlane handles critical error correction, without which scaling quantum computing is impossible. Intel, in turn, brings expertise in silicon qubits and HPC architectures.
