SpaceX acquires Cursor: a $60 billion deal changes the rules of the game at the intersection of space and AI

Elon Musk's company SpaceX has officially confirmed its intention to acquire the AI development platform Cursor. The deal is valued at an impressive $60 billion. This is not just a corporate merger—it is a strategic move that redefines the boundaries between space technology and artificial intelligence.

Details of the Agreement

According to the terms, the transaction will be conducted exclusively through an exchange for SpaceX Class A shares. The conversion ratio will be calculated based on the volume-weighted average closing price over the last seven trading sessions prior to the deal's finalization. This approach minimizes volatility and provides both parties with clear valuation benchmarks.

The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026, pending all necessary regulatory approvals. Interestingly, as early as April of this year, SpaceX had an option: either to buy Cursor for $60 billion or to pay $10 billion under a partnership agreement. The choice in favor of a full acquisition speaks to the high strategic value of this asset for the company.

Analytical Perspective

At first glance, $60 billion is an astronomical sum even for a corporation like SpaceX. However, considering that Cursor represents one of the most advanced AI-based code generation tools, and SpaceX is actively automating production processes and developing its own neural networks for managing Starlink satellites, the synergy becomes obvious.

From my point of view, this deal is a signal to the entire market: the era of autonomous space systems with a full AI management cycle is already on the horizon. SpaceX is not just buying technology—it is acquiring a key element for building a closed ecosystem where code is written by robots for robots operating in space. For investors, this means that in the coming years, we will see a sharp increase in the capitalization of companies that combine space and AI assets.
