HPE combines Cray supercomputers with quantum systems: a new stage of hybrid computing

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has taken an important step toward creating hybrid computing architectures by expanding its collaboration with leading players in the quantum industry. New partners include Intel, IQM, Qblox, Quantinuum, QuEra Computing, Quantum Machines, Rigetti, and Riverlane.

The main goal of the alliance is to integrate the HPE Cray supercomputing platform with quantum processors, control systems, and error correction solutions. This will enable the creation of testbeds for joint algorithm development, software compatibility verification, and performance evaluation of hybrid systems.

Why is this important for the crypto industry?

Hybrid quantum-classical computing can fundamentally change the approach to solving complex problems in cryptography and blockchain. Classical Cray supercomputers will provide high performance for traditional computing, while quantum modules can efficiently handle factorization and optimization tasks critical for cryptanalysis and the development of new protocols.

Of particular interest is the partnership with Quantinuum and Rigetti — companies actively working on quantum algorithms potentially capable of breaking existing cryptographic schemes. However, HPE emphasizes that the current integration is focused on error correction and stability improvement, not on creating threats to blockchain.

My opinion: This step by HPE demonstrates the maturity of the hybrid computing market. For the crypto community, this is a signal — the adoption of post-quantum cryptography must be accelerated, as commercially available quantum-classical systems could emerge within the next 3-5 years. Players who ignore this trend risk becoming vulnerable to the new generation of computing power.
