HPE merges Cray supercomputers with quantum systems: a new stage of hybrid computing

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has taken a significant step forward in the field of high-performance computing by expanding its partner network to integrate quantum technologies with classical supercomputers. As part of a new initiative, HPE is joining forces with leading players in the quantum industry: Intel, IQM, Qblox, Quantinuum, QuEra Computing, Quantum Machines, Rigetti, and Riverlane.

The primary goal of the alliance is to create full-fledged hybrid computing systems, where the power of the HPE Cray supercomputing platform will be complemented by quantum processors. This is not just about co-locating equipment, but about deep integration: quantum chips will work in conjunction with classical control systems and advanced error correction solutions.

Testbeds for the Future

The partners have already begun building specialized testbeds. These platforms will serve as proving grounds for the joint development and testing of hybrid algorithms, verification of software compatibility, and assessment of the real-world performance of the combined systems. This approach will help identify bottlenecks and optimize the interaction between classical and quantum components at the prototyping stage.

Special attention is being paid to the integration of quantum processors from Rigetti and IQM, as well as control systems from Qblox and Quantum Machines. Riverlane, in turn, is responsible for the critical component of error correction, without which scalable quantum computing remains practically impossible. Intel provides its quantum solutions and expertise in semiconductor technology, while Quantinuum and QuEra Computing contribute to the development of quantum algorithms and architectures.

Analytical Commentary: This move by HPE is not just a technological announcement, but a signal that the hybrid computing market is transitioning from theoretical concepts to practical engineering. Integrating quantum systems with existing Cray supercomputers is the most pragmatic path to industrial-scale quantum advantage.
