HPE combines Cray supercomputers with quantum systems: a new stage of hybrid computing
Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is moving to the next stage of computing architecture evolution, officially expanding its collaboration with leading players in the quantum industry. The new partners include Intel, IQM, Qblox, Quantinuum, QuEra Computing, Quantum Machines, Rigetti, and Riverlane. The main goal is to integrate the power of HPE Cray classical supercomputers with quantum processors, control systems, and advanced error correction methods.
Hybrid Architecture: What Changes
The classical computing power of HPE Cray, used for decades for the most resource-intensive tasks, will now be supplemented by quantum accelerators. This is not just installing quantum equipment next to a supercomputer, but deep integration at the algorithm and software level. The partners plan to create specialized testbeds where hybrid algorithms will be jointly developed, software compatibility will be verified, and the real performance of such systems will be evaluated.
Key Technology Vectors
Special attention is paid to two critical aspects: quantum error correction and quantum system control. The participation of Riverlane and Qblox underscores the focus on reliability and control, without which scaling quantum computing is impossible. Intel, in turn, brings expertise in manufacturing silicon qubits, while Quantinuum and Rigetti contribute mature quantum processors. QuEra Computing represents a neutral-atom approach, adding diversification to the technology portfolio.
This move by HPE is not just a technological update, but a strategic signal to the market. While many competitors debate the superiority of classical or quantum machines, HPE is betting on symbiosis.
