HPE integrates Cray supercomputers with quantum systems: a new phase of hybrid computing

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is taking a significant step toward the practical implementation of quantum-classical computing. The company has expanded its partner ecosystem to include leading players in the quantum industry: Intel, IQM, Qblox, Quantinuum, QuEra Computing, Quantum Machines, Rigetti, and Riverlane. The goal is to create fully-fledged hybrid systems where HPE Cray classical supercomputers will be tightly integrated with quantum processors.

Key idea: HPE aims to combine the power of the HPE Cray supercomputing platform with quantum chips, qubit control systems, and advanced error correction solutions. This is not just a theoretical concept — as part of the collaboration, testbeds are already being built for joint algorithm development, software compatibility verification, and performance evaluation of hybrid architectures.

In my view, integrating quantum accelerators into classical HPC infrastructure is the most pragmatic path to quantum supremacy in the coming years. Quantum processors remain niche tools for solving specific problems, but in tandem with Cray supercomputers, they can deliver significant acceleration in areas such as cryptography, molecular structure modeling, and optimization of complex systems.

Expert commentary: The collaboration of such diverse vendors — from the giant Intel to highly specialized startups like Riverlane (error correction) — speaks to the maturity of the market. HPE is essentially forming an open standard for hybrid computing, which is critical for scaling.
