HPE combines Cray supercomputers with quantum systems: a new stage of hybrid computing

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has announced an expansion of its partner ecosystem aimed at integrating classical supercomputers with quantum computers. As part of the new initiative, HPE is joining forces with Intel, IQM, Qblox, Quantinuum, QuEra Computing, Quantum Machines, Rigetti, and Riverlane.

The key goal of the project is to create hybrid quantum-classical systems based on the HPE Cray platform. The company plans to integrate high-performance supercomputers with quantum processors, qubit control systems, and error correction solutions. This will combine the computational power of classical machines with the unique capabilities of quantum accelerators.

The partners have already begun building specialized testbeds. These platforms will be used for joint algorithm development, software compatibility testing, and performance evaluation of hybrid architectures. Particular attention is being paid to the scalability and practical applicability of such systems for solving complex problems in modeling, cryptography, and optimization.

Analytical commentary: This move by HPE is a logical continuation of the trend toward the convergence of classical and quantum computing. Integrating Cray supercomputers with quantum processors from leading developers, including Rigetti and Quantinuum, could significantly accelerate the commercial market entry of quantum solutions. However, the key challenges remain error correction and the stability of hybrid systems—without breakthroughs in these areas, the widespread adoption of quantum accelerators will remain a matter of several years.
